Several days ago, I saw a report which said China sent more than 1.5 million people to study abroad. But till today, only 0.5 million have come back to the country. We can foresee that more and more Chinese overseas students will choose to go back to the motherland to serve the country, and the value of studying overseas has been decreasing. In my company, people with overseas education backgroud have just the same treatment as people who have their higher education at home. Also somebody told me that their friends or relatives could not even find a job after getting back. So do you thing it is worth going abroad for further studies? share you ideas!

I think it would depend on what they studied abroad, and their work experience. I remember watching that on ICS (before my TV broke...darn, I miss my TV, lol).
With the large number of foreign companies here in China, esp. Shanghai, I guess these graduates could always apply for jobs at these companies? I believe that when it comes to the Chinese studying abroad, they really can use that experience to their advantage. But in terms of local businesses, it would probably be a negative thing because they probably won't understand the Chinese market as much as someone who studied here in China.

Yes, if you want to work in a multinational or a foreign company, your overseas experience will certainly be an advantage, but working for a local company does not require these experiences. However, people here seems not to realize this, and it is simply a trend and fashion to study in a foreign country

I can understand why many people would want to stay abroad. I think for most people, regardless of which country they are from, have a certain misconception that the grass is always greener on the other side. The truth of the matter is, unless you are being hired from your motherland to go work in another country on expatriate terms, chances are your wages will be less than the locals in the hiring country.
With the exception of China of course where if you are white, you are paid a little more than if you are a local or someone of darker colour / Asian in general. The ones hiring will insist that it's the level of English that they are looking for, but we all know that's not really true! How can you know if someone's English is okay, or excellent if yours is poor anyway? |

![]() But going back to the subject, many of my teachers are masters degree students who have studied overseas...I don't really know if teaching is something they always wanted to do but teaching doesn't really pay well does it? Nevertheless, I'm sure there are advantages to studying abroad esp. for the Chinese. It just makes you an open-minded person, and in the arts/design field it stimulates creativity because you're exposed to a new environment.

I think even if as Wanzheli said, the students who study abroad might end up being paid the same as a local, I'm sure they probably have a higher chance of being employed though. Of course it depends on which University. There are a handful of well reputed Chinese Universities and they will probably be prioritized over Universities some employers have never heard about abroad.

![]() What will you be studying and where do you plan to go? Well, if these are personal questions, you don't have to reply, heehee... ![]() If you can find this book in your city/province you should definitely buy/read it. It's about a Chinese woman who goes to England and she experiences a whole lot of new things, and she even falls in love. It's a great book, written by a Chinese lady. One of my dreams right now is to study language in Greece, it would be cool to do that for one year.
